ISEB has been reviewing the Common Entrance archives. The earliest papers we have on file go back to 1947 - 70 years ago! It is interesting to think that two years after the end of World War Two, children were still preparing for entrance to their chosen independent senior school. What does this suggest about the determination of the British at the time?
Below is the Common Entrance Arithmetic paper from 1947 and a non-calculator paper from 2012. How would pupils today fare with the 1947 questions? How different are the questions asked today from those asked 70 years ago? We’d love to know if any teachers try these out in class - what did your pupils think? Do email us!
