Our French syllabus aims to help pupils develop the skills to understand the written and spoken language and use the language effectively across a broad range of linguistic activities while encouraging positive attitudes towards the use of foreign languages and towards speakers of foreign languages.
Candidates may use a standard English-French dictionary during the preparation period for speaking exams only. Candidates whose first language is not English may have access to a bilingual translation dictionary, but not in the target language (French).
In addition to the specification, we recommend that prep schools read the ‘Modern languages listening and speaking instructions and regulations’ document linked in the Documentation section below.
French for CE at 13+
We offer the CE French exam at Level 1 and Level 2. Level 1 is aimed at candidates who have studied French for between 30 and 40 hours, or who find the language difficult. Candidates at both levels will sit three papers, in speaking, listening, and reading and writing.
We advise prep schools to liaise with senior schools about the levels which candidates should sit. They should also ensure that candidates are registered for the right level on the ISEB website, so that the correct examination papers are sent to schools.
French for CASE at 13+
The CASE is designed to challenge the most able students at 13+ in close analysis and interpretation of literary texts. Candidates taking the CASE French exam will sit three papers, in speaking, listening, and reading and writing.
See the French specification below for more details.
